Animals of Prague III.

Google maps (or in Czechia mapy.cz) is very useful tool to finding hidden gems in nature. And that is exactly how I found a small nature preserve called Sand quarry. It is very picturesque piece of nature lying next to one of the ugliest part of Prague - Černý most, which is full of concrete prefab buildings. The quarry itself is not operational since 1960 and was flooded with the water from nearby stream. The trees growing there slowly died, but left the stumps of their trunks still poking out of the water surface. That made a comfy habitat for plenty of bird species, such as mute swans, Eurasian coots, mallards, grey herons or even kingfishers. The artificial lake is now surrounded with fields and stubbles with bushes, which give home to sparrows and other singing birds. But the concrete jungle next door is not without life as well. During my short stay I was able to spot several kestrels.
