Animals of Prague I.

This year I had an opportunity to take several trips to Prague. Truth to be told, I never really liked the city too much. However, this year is pretty different from most (I think you can probably relate to that, huh?) and so was my experience of visiting our capital. The absence of tourists changed the mood of the city to almost surreal. And for the first time in my life I can say, that I truly enjoyed my time in Prague, where I decided to explore not just well-known (and now almost empty) places, but also its parks and natural landmarks. And it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t take plenty of pictures. In fact so many, that I decided to make a small series of them.

In this first post I would like to show you quite an unexpected inhabitant of the city - the coypu (also known as the nutria). These fairly large rodents live on the river banks and look quite cute. However, they don’t really belong in Czech nature and are considered an invasive species originally coming from South America. The first four pictures were taken in February in Podolí district where the nutrias enjoyed attention and food from excited kids and their parents. I met them by chance and before that I didn’t even know you can find wild nutrias in Czechia. I spent about an hour in with them and as you can see, they really aren’t afraid of humans at all. However, I do not consider that to be a good thing, since if the wild animals lose their skittishness, it is often just troubles waiting to happen.

The other pictures were taken in August in the very historical downtown of Prague (in Malá strana district). I would never expect to capture a nutria and the Charles bridge in the same picture. But anything is possible during 2020, I guess.
